How to Handle Your Gun With Only One Hand

If one of your arms is injured, or preoccupied by holding essential equipment or even a loved one (like a child or spouse), you won’t be able to use it to load a round in the chamber or to reload a magazine. There are several ways to deal with this predicament, which are different for a pistol and a rifle, because of their size and weight difference.

Loading a round in a pistol
To load a round in the chamber using only one hand, follow these steps:

  1. Draw the pistol with your available hand.
  2. Use the front sights of the pistol to press against a hard surface and load it:
    1. Your shooter belt is a great option – if it’s strong enough to hold your holstered weapon and magazines, it should be firm enough to give a good counter for the slide to fully wrack.
    2. Bend your leg on your other knee in a half sitting pose, and use your shoe’s sole as a hard surface to wrack the slide and load a round in the chamber.
    3. Use any hard surface around you – the edge of a firm table, the edge of a car door, or even one of the edges in a car’s interior will do just fine in an emergency.
  3. Lay either suppressive or accurate fire, until you’re able to move to safety.

Reloading a magazine into a pistol
To reload a magazine into a pistol, follow these steps:

  1. Place your pistol upside down under your arm or between your knees – make sure it’s pointing forward and toward the ground.
  2. Release the magazine by pressing the magazine release button.
  3. Remove the empty magazine.
  4. Place  the empty magazine in your belt or pouch, or just drop it.
  5. Properly grab a full magazine – your index finger should point toward the front side of the bullets.
  6. Place the magazine into the pistol and give it a good whack, making sure it’s fully in place.
  7. Either press the slide release button or follow the steps above to load the pistol.
  8. Lay either suppressive or accurate fire, until you’re able to move to safety.

Loading a round in an assault rifle
To load your assault rifle using only one hand, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that your rifle’s safety is on.
  2. Stand or lay down behind cover and bend your knees to a half sitting pose – if you’re laying down, your available arm should be on top. Place the rifle between your knees – make sure that the magazine is pointing down and the muzzle is pointing forward and down.
  3. Pull and release the loading lever to load a round in the chamber.
  4. Pick up the firearm with your available hand, and look closely at the location of the bolt – if it’s not fully cocked, use the type 2 or 3 jam fixing techniques.
  5. Place the weapon on a solid surface and fire single shots – stay above sights and try to fix your aim according to the hits (if you’re able to aim between sights then do that). Lay either suppressive or accurate fire, until you’re able to move to safety.

Reloading a magazine into an assault rifle
To reload a magazine into an assault rifle, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that the rifle’s safety is on.
  2. Stand or lay down behind cover – if you’re laying down your available arm should be on top. Place the rifle upside down between your knees, with the magazine pointing up, and the muzzle pointing forward and down.
  3. Press the magazine release button with your thumb, then grab the empty magazine and place it in your belt or pouch.
  4. Take a full magazine from your belt or pouch, holding it properly with your thumb on the backside of the bullets.
  5. Place the magazine into the magazine well, and smack it to make sure it’s all the way in there.
  6. Turn the rifle over so the magazine is pointing down, while the muzzle is still pointing forward and down.
  7. Press the bolt release button or use the technique above to load your rifle.
  8. Lay suppressive or accurate fire, until you’re able to get to safety.
